A new stenciling blog…

Stencil TalkThere’s a new stenciling blog in cyberspace, and I have to admit, it’s a little better than this one. For one thing, it’s updated more often, with new posts every M-W-F.  For another, it’s written in collaboration with paintergirl Carol Leonesio, a very talented professional artist who frequently uses stencils in her daily work.  She has lots of ideas and enthusiasm and I couldn’t be more pleased to have her on the StencilTalk! team.

Yes, the new blog, StencilTalk! is affiliated with StencilSearch.com, where I spend most of my spare web development time.  I provide behind the scenes technical support for Carol’s posts, and occasionally contribute a project or article of my own.

Mill Creek Stenciling will remain as my own personal stenciling blog, but check out StencilTalk for the really good stuff. Not only will it be updated more often, but Carol’s a much better writer than I am.

Whimsical Walls

HissI’ve just learned that Whimsical Walls Stencils, which produces great stencils for kids’ rooms, will be shutting down business on December 31st.

The owner is selling off the remaining stock at a 40% discount until the end of the year, so if you want any of these adorable stencil designs for your own kids’ rooms, hurry and get them before they are all gone.

Culinary Stencils

Not being too handy in the kitchen, I would never have thought to use stencils with food. But if I were getting married today, this is the cake I would want. Featured in Martha Stewart Weddings “Something Borrowed” (Spring 2008), it uses the Damask 5 tier set from Designer Stencils. Designer Stencils offers a large selection of Cake & Confectionery Stencils, as well as stencils for painting.

Freezer Paper Stenciling

When I hear the words “freezer paper” in relation to stenciling, it usually makes me think of Linda Buckingham’s Projection Stenciling method. Today, however, I stumbled across a blog called The Artful Parent which has a great post describing the process of using freezer paper to stencil on fabric, like the t-shirts shown.

Martha Stewart Living Features Stenciling

Martha Stewart Living
I just learned, by reading my friend Carol’s blog, that the September issue of Martha Stewart Living featured stenciling in its cover article. (See, I told you stenciling wasn’t dead!).

Stenciled Tshirts

Stencil1One of the best things about stenciling is it’s versatility. You can use stencils to paint just about anything, including walls, furniture, or fabric, in styles ranging from traditional theorems to street graffiti.

And sometimes you can even stencil without paint.

The tshirt pictured was stenciled with bleach using a design from Stencil1. Take a look at their instructions for stenciling with bleach before you tackle your own project. Their site also contains video clips showing Martha Stewart using Stencil1 designs to create TShirts with both bleach and paint.

Stencil 101

You can find more projects like this in Stencil1 creator Ed Roth’s new book, Stencil 101. The book includes 25 reusable stencils.
