Freezer Paper Stenciling

When I hear the words “freezer paper” in relation to stenciling, it usually makes me think of Linda Buckingham’s Projection Stenciling method. Today, however, I stumbled across a blog called The Artful Parent which has a great post describing the process of using freezer paper to stencil on fabric, like the t-shirts shown.

Stenciled Tshirts

Stencil1One of the best things about stenciling is it’s versatility. You can use stencils to paint just about anything, including walls, furniture, or fabric, in styles ranging from traditional theorems to street graffiti.

And sometimes you can even stencil without paint.

The tshirt pictured was stenciled with bleach using a design from Stencil1. Take a look at their instructions for stenciling with bleach before you tackle your own project. Their site also contains video clips showing Martha Stewart using Stencil1 designs to create TShirts with both bleach and paint.

You can find more projects like this in Stencil1 creator Ed Roth’s new book, Stencil 101. The book includes 25 reusable stencils.

Stenciled Screens

As I rework this site, I’ve been sorting through all the files sitting on the server gathering dust, and was surprised to stumble across this photo.

Stenciled Screen DoorI painted this screen years ago, to hide the lovely view of the garage behind it. I later took a screen stenciling class from Nancy Tribolet, and learned how I could have done it better! For instance, I had trouble getting the tape holding my stencil up to stay in place, but Nancy taught us to use stud earrings instead of tape. (She really is a wonderful teacher, so if you ever get the chance to take one of her classes, snap it up!)

If you’d like to see more of my screen door, look here.

A quick google search brought up some more ideas for screen stenciling:
